Overview of the ASA Accreditation Process
When ASA receives your completed accreditation file, it is sent out for review by the International Board of Examiners (BOE) which is made up of volunteer Accredited Senior Appraisers from every discipline. Two members of the BOE will review your entire accreditation package. The initial examiner will complete a review of your file within 40 days and return the packet to ASA Headquarters. The file is then sent to an adviser who also has 40 days to review and return your file to ASA Headquarters. The results will be mailed to you once the two reviews are completed.
Your advancement to Accredited Member (AM) or Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) is complete once:
- The International Board of Examiners approves your full-time appraisal experience, educational background (i.e., college degree) and appraisal report(s), determines that you completed and passed the education requirements of your discipline and determines that you passed the comprehensive examination for your discipline (if applicable).
When all the requirements have been approved, you will be awarded your designation and provided with your AM or ASA certificate (this will be mailed to your chapter president within four to six weeks after your designation is awarded).
If some portion of the package fails to meet ASA guidelines, you will be provided comments on what needs to be resubmitted or repeated. If you do not agree with the decision of the BOE, you may forward a written appeal to the attention of your discipline committee's vice chair, care of the director of education and accreditation at ASA Headquarters.

General Accreditation Information
Please note that the following information is of a general nature. Each ASA discipline has specific accreditation guidelines to be followed. Please review the guide for your discipline above or contact your discipline accreditation specialist for more information.
Experience
To qualify for Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) status, an individual must have a minimum of 5 years of full-time appraisal experience or the equivalent. At least 2 years of full-time appraisal experience or the equivalent are necessary for Accredited Member (AM) status. Collateral and/or related activities are not considered appraisal experience.

College Education
In general, each Candidate must have a four-year college degree or its equivalent.* Two years of appraisal experience are considered equivalent to one year of college (appraisal experience used toward college equivalency must be additional experience and not the same experience accumulated to fulfill the requirements listed above). Please see your discipline's accreditation guide or contact your discipline's accreditation specialist for specific college requirements and equivalency information.
Appraisal Reports
The appraisal report or reports are a significant factor in the evaluation of the total accreditation application and should support and define the experience, education and appraisal qualifications of each applicant. Accreditation will be awarded only to those applicants who demonstrate proficiency in performing complex appraisal assignments. ASA's International Board of Examiners will not issue a final decision on accreditation applications until all factors (experience, education, examination and appraisal reports) have been considered.

Examinations
Some disciplines require candidates to pass a comprehensive exam before a designation is awarded. This exam evaluates the technical appraisal proficiency of the Candidate and their acquaintance with the society's ethics, principles and basic precepts. Professional Education Equivalency Certification Program (PEECP)
ASA welcomes members from the following organizations through its Professional Education Equivalency Certification Program (PEECP). If you hold a designation from one of the following organizations, you may be exempt from having to complete some of your discipline accreditation requirements. Please check your discipline-specific accreditation guide for complete information and be sure to include your certificate or proof of designation in your accreditation packet submitted to ASA Headquarters to ensure proper credit. Please note that those taking advantage of ASA’s PEECP Program still need to join ASA through the new member application process and meet the requirements of all new members prior to applying for a designation.
- AICPA: ABV designation and CPA (with five or more years of public service)
- CICBV: CBV designation
- CFA Institute: CFA designation
- IBA: MCBA designation and CBA designation
- ICBI: CBI designation (with five years of public service)
- GIA: Graduate Gemologist (G.G.) diploma

- ISA Accredited Members and ISA CAPP
- AAA Certified Members
- IAAO: RES and CAE
- ASFMRA: AAC, AFM, ARA, RPRA
